Throw in a big, athletic frontline that relentlessly attacks the rim and a slick point guard in Ace Baldwin, and the Rams have the firepower necessary for a March surprise. “We played the last two games and guys scored layups because they’re on the same side of the court as Shrive.” “Him just being out on the court has gotten guys shots and made lanes to score even wider,” Rhoades says. In conference play, he is knocking down 46.8% of his threes and changing how teams defend the Rams. The 6-foot-6 transfer from Hartford has been scorching nets lately. But David Shriver is changing that calculus. VCU falls short in that area in their season numbers: The Rams rank 297th nationally in 3-point frequency (33.1%) and only make 33.7% of them. Taking (and making) lots of threes is typically a key factor in producing upsets. And if recent developments are predictive of future results, Slingshot may be underselling the Rams’ chances. That’s a big reason why our model gives the Rams a 16.2% chance of beating a generic team seeded at least five spots higher. We’re more aggressive and more sound in the halfcourt.” Even if we don’t get steals in the backcourt, we can still get steals in the frontcourt. “That’s where we’re better that’s where we’re different. “I think the difference from the past to now is that when we sit down in halfcourt defense, we get turnovers,” Rhoades says. And unlike in Shaka Smart’s version of Havoc (when Rhoades served as an assistant coach), the pressure continues even after the opponent crosses midcourt. The Rams rank fourth in the nation in defensive turnover rate (24.8%), the fifth year in a row they’ve had a top-10 outfit and the eighth time in the past 12 seasons they’ve hit that mark. VCU is no stranger to tourney upsets and remains a patron saint of giant killing because of its continued emphasis on pressing and trapping to force bundles of turnovers. We didn’t win enough out of conference this year, but now that is drastically magnified because we don’t have as many opportunities.”īut if VCU runs the table in Brooklyn or somehow finds its way into an at-large bid? We’re not the only ones in this boat, so I’m not crying over spilled milk. If I showed you his notebooks – because he writes everything down – and how hard we try to get games, and even neutral games, it’s just really difficult. “It’s the hardest part of this job, and it’s the one thing that’s changed the most,” says VCU head coach Mike Rhoades. Add in early-season tournaments and events like the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, and there is less incentive for those schools to schedule their few remaining games against challenging mid-major programs like VCU. Why? Power conferences have increased, meaning they play more league games. Now, they are fighting for fewer available slots and have less of a chance to prove themselves. It wasn’t long ago that leagues such as the A-10 or American could expect three or even four teams to reach the NCAA tournament. But conference realignment has centralized even more tourney bids in the hands of the mighty few. In the past, that résumé might have been enough to get VCU into the NCAA tourney. Even our model views them as a slightly lesser team than Dayton (albeit the better potential killer). But they’re just 68th in the NET rankings, and most bracketologists don’t view them as a likely at-large team if they slip up in the conference tournament in Brooklyn. The Rams lead the conference by two games at 14-3 and boast a 23-7 overall record.

But X is now very old technology – it was first released in 1984 – and while it has served admirably for nearly 40 years, some desktop environments are now using replacements. This is what provides the basic services of a window environment – drawing windows, moving them around, managing the mouse pointer and so on. Desktops in Linux have always been based on the X Window System, usually just referred to as X. The other advantage of mutter is that it is a necessary step towards the future of Linux desktop environments. Which is another answer to the question, “so why didn’t you move to GTK+3 years ago…?”) (This does mean, unfortunately, that on those systems, tooltips will now have square corners. As a result, on Raspberry Pis with less than 2GB, the older openbox window manager is still used instead. One drawback of mutter is that, due to needing to draw the entire screen to memory before it can display it, it is quite demanding in terms of RAM, and can only run properly on a Raspberry Pi with 2GB or more. Mutter gives nice window opening and closing animations, and provides shading behind each window border the changes are subtle, but they do make the desktop feel more modern. GTK+3 relies on a compositing window manager to round the corners of tooltips in GTK+2 this was done with a hack similar to the one we use to create rounded window frames in openbox, but this has been removed in GTK+3 and the window manager is asked to do it instead. (While we did have rounded corners in openbox, this was done in a rather inefficient fashion by drawing multiple frames of varying sizes for each window – it worked, but it really wasn’t elegant!) This is then sent to the hardware to be displayed.īecause it has control of the whole screen, a compositing window manager can create some nice visual effects which are not possible (or at least not easy) with a traditional window manager: for instance, it can round the corners of windows, or display shaded borders behind each window. Mutter is what is known as a compositing window manager, which means that rather than individually drawing the window frames straight onto the existing windows on screen, it draws all the windows to a memory buffer off screen, where it creates a complete image for the entire screen. The window manager is responsible for drawing the title bar and window frame around each application window. One of the changes which was prompted by the move to GTK+3 is that we are using a new window manager, called mutter, instead of the openbox window manager used in previous releases. GTK+3 just gives us a more modern basis for future development, and brings us into line with other Linux desktop environments. Some other controls have a slightly different appearance, but we’ve tried to make sure that everything still looks familiar and largely unchanged. You’ll notice a few changes to widgets – the most obvious is the new appearance of tabbed interfaces. It has ended up being necessary to find work-arounds to a lot of these – hopefully no one will notice them and everything will still work as before! The simple answer is that many things are much easier to do with GTK+2 than with GTK+3, particularly when it comes to customising the appearance of widgets – GTK+3 has removed several useful features which we relied upon. GTK+3 has been around for several years now, and people have occasionally asked why we didn’t move to it before now. Up until now, most of the desktop has used version 2 of the GTK+ toolkit, but increasing numbers of Debian applications are using GTK+3, so to try and keep things consistent, we’ve upgraded all our software and the desktop itself to the newer version. GTK+ is a layer of software that applications can use to draw standard user interface components (known as “widgets”) such as buttons, menus and the like, so that all applications have a consistent look and feel. GTK+3Īll of the desktop components and applications are now using version 3 of the GTK+ user interface toolkit. However, over and above the changes in Debian itself, the ‘bullseye’ version of Raspberry Pi OS has a number of significant changes to the desktop environment and to the support for Raspberry Pi hardware. So what is new this time?ĭebian ‘bullseye’ has relatively few major changes which are visible to users – there are some under-the-hood changes to file systems and printing, but most of the changes are patches and upgrades to existing applications and features. We’ve been working on the corresponding ‘bullseye’ release of Raspberry Pi OS it’s taken a bit longer than we’d hoped, but it is now available. Fleming claims these songs alone would be one of the greatest EP’s ever made, but I think he is blinded by the excellence of ‘Hey Bulldog.’ I hear two gems and basically middling to less quality Beatles material. Here is the Goodreads link: There are six Beatles songs on side A of Yellow Submarine. This all ties in with an excellent book I’ve been reading: Sound Pictures: The Life Of Beatles Producer George Martin - The Later Years 1966-2016 by Kenneth Womack. Check it out What I get from the article is an appreciation for The Beatles more ‘out-there’ music, and a love for the song ‘Hey Bulldog’ in particular with a great appreciation for George Martin’s orchestrated soundtrack on side B of the LP. It is informed by a Daily Beast article by the excellent writer Colin Fleming. “They made a conscious decision to take off the Beatles suits and not have the haircuts and become individuals. This blog is about The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine movie soundtrack, released in 1969. “They were punching through the walls of Abbey Road (Studios),” Martin says. Robert” to the elegant strings in “Eleanor Rigby” to the understated tenderness in “Here, There and Everywhere,” the songs on “Revolver” epitomized The Beatles’ sonic expansion. “The Beatles were relentless in their creativity.”įrom the beefy, staccato guitars in “Taxman” and “Dr. “Just the way the drums open the song, you can sense they turned their back on the past in a way,” Martin says. Martin cites “Tomorrow Never Knows,” the first track recorded for “Revolver,” as the immediate indicator in the band’s enlightened musical approach. “It’s like they’re leaving Liverpool on ‘Revolver.' " “There’s still an aim to please on ‘Rubber Soul,’ ” he says. But by “Revolver,” the band had found its “swagger.” In Martin’s view, 1965’s “Rubber Soul” is stocked with the Merseybeat sound, the British music genre that developed in Liverpool in the early ‘60s and blended rock, pop, skiffle and R&B. “They were punching through the walls of Abbey Road” with their creative evolution, producer Giles Martin says. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr working on "Revolver" in Abbey Road Studios. 'Love' in Las Vegas: Catch The Beatles' Cirque du Soleil show while you can How The Beatles evolved from 'Rubber Soul' to 'Revolver' But at this stage, they were delighted by the way they were creatively pushing each other." “Which, of course, was their downfall in the end. “It wouldn’t have been as commercial in that original form, and you can hear them working together and pushing each other in different directions,” Martin says. Martin says he understood why The Beatles opted to steer the tune in a perkier direction. Part 2 of the working version of “Yellow Submarine” retains Lennon’s acoustic guitar backdrop, but it also includes Lennon and McCartney discussing how to march forward with a robust folk-style version of the song, which by that point included the famously recognizable chorus. Going through the cobwebs and finding the gold – that’s what I want to transfer to other people.” “One of the thrills I get when doing this is for people to experience the same thing I experience. It was a complete discovery and I was surprised,” Martin says. But finding Lennon’s original version of the song was one of the happy accidents that often occur when mining tapes. Martin jokes that people think he spends all his time listening to outtakes of The Beatles. The Beatles (John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Paul McCartney) in Abbey Road Studios during filming of the "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" promotional films on May 19, 1966. Previously unseen photos of The Beatles: See a young Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison John Lennon’s demo of ‘Yellow Submarine’ was a ‘complete discovery’ Or a deep purple submarine, that would have been like, ‘What are they talking about now?’ But, yeah, it was a Ringo song, like ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ was a Ringo song.” It could have been in a green submarine, but a yellow submarine is much better. “I think Paul thought of (a yellow submarine). They had this song and they decided to liven it up,” he says. “The boys used to write a song for me and they’d present whatever they thought would be good for me. Lennon’s working version of the song – just more than a minute long – finds him quietly repeating the lyric “In the place where I was born, no one cared, no one cared” as he works in other modifications such as “and the name that I was born, no one cared” and “in the town where I come from, no one cared.”īy the time “Yellow Submarine” was presented to Starr – the band recorded it on May 26 and J– it was already in “Ringo song” form. The drummer maintained a reputation as the quirky, funny guy in the band, which might be why Lennon and Paul McCartney earmarked certain tunes as “Ringo songs.” The cover art for The Beatles' 1966 album, "Revolver," designed by Klaus Voormann. There's even a story to go along with your molecule building, and it explains why you're doing what you're doing and adds a nice narrative to the whole experience. Now you're beginning to see the challenge, right? And fortunately for us, this description only scratches the surface. The red and blue paths can also overlap as well as activate things for each other. Atoms can be bonded multiple times (depending on their limitations), each bond accomplished by setting atoms on paired reactors and initiating a "bond" command. A repeatable, looping set of programs that builds a perfect molecule and drops it off in the correct grid space. But in a true "games for engineers" fashion, you must build a mechanism that can accomplish this ten times. Now, it would be relatively simple to create a machine that does this once or twice. By laying commands on to these belts, you can move elements around the grid, outfitting them as instructed by the level goals, and depositing them in the correct positions. You work from a grid and two colored WALDOS that function as conveyor belts. Much like The Codex of Alchemical Engineering, SpaceChem is all about assembling molecules from simple atoms using a series of programmable commands. Here's a quick introduction to the mechanics, just so you know what to expect. SpaceChem is much easier to pick up than previous releases, though, which is encouraging for casual players. If you've ever played a game from Zachtronics Industries, you know it isn't really possible to read a paragraph introduction and learn everything about the game. SpaceChem is a game you'll spend a few minutes learning but weeks trying to master, and its 50+ levels are more than enough to strain your poor brain matter more than it's been strained in quite some time. If you can solve its challenges, that is. SpaceChem is anything but simple, anything but easy, and one of the most satisfying puzzle games released. The creator of The Codex of Alchemical Engineering and Bureau of Steam Engineering (not to mention the grandaddy of Minecraft, Infiniminer) is back with a full-fledged indie game ready to provide a serious logic puzzle challenge. |
